Nigeria set up Last 16 Clash with Germany After Beating Hungary

A brace from striker Taiwo Awoniyi was enough to seal a last Round of 16 place for African Champions Nigeria in the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand.

The African powerhouse pressed their European counterpart high up the field, making it uncomfortable for their danger man, Bence Meryo to operate whilst they keep firing at the other end.

Awoniyi almost gave Nigeria the lead in the 16th minute, but his powerful close range header was saved by Gyorgy Szekely in post for Hungary. In the 33rd minute however, Awoniyi broke the deadlock connecting from Godwin Saviour’s low cross.

Hungary did not give coach Manu Garba’s side too much to worry about, but Mario Nemeth nearly level the score for the Hungarians in just some few minutes into the second half with a superb shot from 30 yards which rattled the crossbar leaving Joshua Enaholo in post for Nigeria in a complete wonderland.

Taiwo Awoniyi signed off his goal account when he picked a loose ball, dribble past a defender and then rounded goalkeeper Szekely before putting the ball into the yawning net.

Nigeria will now meet one of the tournament’s favourite Germany in the Round of 16 phase.
