Student shot and killed in Bawku

A student of the Bawku Technical Institute in the Upper East Region has been shot dead, reports say.

Emmanuel Awuni Issah, 20, was shot on his way home after the school closed down following students’ protest Thursday.

He fell off the bike he was riding when three masked men armed with AK 47 shot at him and his female friend.

The students were demonstrating after they were informed that their Vice Principal, Jacob Feli, has been transferred to the Municipal Education Office in Navrongo.

According to the students, they did not want the principal to be transferred.

Several attempts by the school authorities to calm the students down were unsuccessful.

They refused to take breakfast and lunch and blocked roads leading to the school.

To prevent chaos and the damage to property, the Municipal Director of Education Janet Kawiate and the school authorities decided to close down the school.

The Upper East Regional Police Public Relations Officer ASP Thomas Agbanyo told Joy News’ Upper East Regional correspondent Albert Sore that Emmanuel rode the bike for about 100 metres after the he was hit by the bullet before he fell off.

The female friend, Cynthia Abugri, 23 who is believed to be Emmanuel’s in-law was also seriously injured.

She is currently receiving treatment at the Quality Hospital in Garu.
