I’ll Look Into Amnesty’s Allegations Against Nigerian Military – Buhari

Buhari-Service ChiefsPresident Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday gave the assurance that he will review a report by the human rights organization, Amnesty International, alleging widespread torture and extra-judicial killings by Nigerian military in the ongoing fight against Boko Haram in Northeastern Nigeria.

In a report published Wednesday, the human rights organization accused the military of killing 8,000 prisoners in extra-judicial circumstances.

The report listed senior military commanders, including serving and past service chiefs, and suggested that they be investigated for possible war crimes.

The Senior Special Assistant (Media & Publicity) to the President, Garba Shehu, said in a statement in Niamey, Niger Republic on Wednesday, that Mr. Buhari has received the report, which he said contains many disturbing allegations.

According to the media aide, President Buhari assured his administration will study the document and act appropriately.

“I assure you that your report will be looked into”, President Buhari was quoted as saying.

Mr. Buhari said without meaning to prejudice the outcome of any investigation, Nigerians needed to be reassured that “this administration will leave no stone unturned to promote the rule of law, and deal with all cases of human rights abuses”.

“Respect for human rights and adherence to the rule of law are the life and soul of the democratic system. We will not tolerate or condone impunity and reckless disregard for human rights”, he added.
