Korle-Bu Rapist Gets 20 Years

Emmanuel Aryee, the robber at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra whose attempt to rape his victim compelled her to jump from the top floor of a two-storey hostel facility, was yesterday handed a 20-year jail term by an Accra Circuit Court.

The accused, also known as Kahn, was infuriated by the failure of the victim to give the GH¢1,500 he had demanded, and consequently attempted to rape the final year medical student.

It was the case of the prosecution, led by Inspector Martin Acheampong, that Kahn, a welder at Korle-Bu, robbed one Ruth Naa Dedei Aryeetey of her Toshiba laptop computer and Samsung mobile phone.

Although the accused had denied the offence at the initial stages of the trial, the court presided over by Justice Francis Obiri later found him guilty.

In sentencing the accused, the trial judge said the denial of the offence by the accused in the dock was self-seeking, stressing that the prosecution was able to establish a case against the accused.

However, Justice Obiri said the accused was a first offender and that he had shown remorse.

He stated that the action of Kahn had, however, resulted in the victim using crutches and deferring her course at the Medical School.

Justice Obiri accordingly handed him a 20-year jail term to serve as a deterrent to others.

Earlier, George Asamanney, lawyer for Kahn, prayed the court to deal leniently with his client since he had had no brush with the law.

The court heard that on January 29 this year, at about 6:25pm, Naa Dedei spotted the accused holding a folded polythene bag on her corridor about 20 metres away from her room.

Inspector Acheampong said as soon as the complainant entered her room, Kahn quickly followed her, locked the door and pulled out a kitchen knife from the polythene bag.

The police officer said Kahn warned her not to scream or else he would hurt her.

He said Kahn demanded the aforestated amount of money from the victim but she could not provide it, adding that this infuriated the accused who ordered the complainant to lie on her bed, to which she obliged.

He noted that Kahn then pulled down his shorts and attempted to rape her.

However, the victim pleaded with Kahn to allow her turn off her stove at the balcony and that the complainant thereafter asked Kahn to hold her hands so that they would prayer.

He further stated that in the process, she ran through the door to the balcony and jumped from the second floor and crawled to the main entrance where she raised an alarm and Kahn was arrested.

He said the victim, who sustained injuries, was rushed to the Korle-Bu Hospital where she was admitted.
