Revealed: Essien chose Panathinaikos after Red Bull no show

Ghana midfielder Michael Essien decided to sign for Greek side Panathinaikos because ‘New York Red Bulls’ call never came’.

The 32-year-old had politely declined the advances of a couple of heavyweight Greek clubs because he was “waiting for a call from the New York Red Bulls.”

However, it seemed an improbable dream, and Essien would appear to agree: because he switched off his phone and hopped a plane to Greece.

Essien travelled to Athens to watch Panathinaikos’s 2-0 victory over PAOK Salonika on Sunday, and gave interviews to local media ahead of his move.

Essien is expected to undergo his medical with the Greek giants on Tuesday before signing a two-year contract worth รขโ€šยฌ1.2m per year.

He played for Chelsea between 2005 and 2015 where he won nine trophies, including two Premier League medals, four FA Cups and the Champions League.
