‘Gay doctor’ opens defence; challenges claim he has HIV

Lawyers for the ‘gay doctor,’ Sulley Ali Gabass, have debunked claims their client has HIV and infected a minor with the deadly disease through sexual encounters.

The senior medical officer at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital opened his defence, Monday. He is facing two counts of defiling a child under 16 years and having unnatural carnal knowledge of a minor- charges he has denied.

The accused was said to have struck a good mentor-mentee relationship with a minor, whose name has been withheld but the relationship turned into an intimate one.

Following an investigative piece by Joy News’ Manasseh Azure Awuni, it emerged the accused person on five occasions had anal sex with the minor.

It took surgery to repair the anal region of the victim after it was badly damaged.

The minor has also been infected with HIV and is accusing Dr Ali Gabass of being the one who infected him with the virus.

But the doctor has vehemently challenged the claim.

During hearing, Monday, which was in-camera, the lawyers said Dr Ali-Gabass does not have HIV and can therefore not be responsible for infecting the minor with the disease.

Joy News’ Kwakye Afreh Nuamah who got snippets of information from the hearing reported the lawyers as saying the claim that Dr Ali-Gabass infected the victim with the virus could be injurious to his career because it is not true. He has no HIV.

The case has been adjourned to June 5, 2015.
