Accra, Ghana, May 28, 2015 – The Ghana Campus of Webster University graduated its first batch of post-graduate students at an impressive commencement ceremony last Saturday on the campus in East Cantonments. Distinguished guests at the ceremony included Mr. Daniel Fennell, Public Affairs Officer at the Embassy of the United States of America, Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah, Director of Tertiary Education, who represented the Honourable Deputy Minister of Education in Charge of Tertiary Education, and members of the diplomatic community.
The graduates completed 14 months of study, graduating with a Master of Arts in International Relations or a Master of Business Administration. A Doctor of Management was awarded to a Ghanaian student who completed her degree at the main campus in St. Louis, USA.
The Ghana Campus Director, Ms. Christa E. Sanders, emphasised Webster’s commitment to Ghana’s development by contributing to opportunities for international higher education. “Webster nurtures its students to become true global citizens through combining academic depth, intellectual breadth and the freedom to explore diverse interests to develop their individual abilities.”
Dr. Benjamin Ola. Akande, Dean of the George Herbert Walker School of Business and Technology at Webster University, a guest speaker at the ceremony, encouraged students to be key participants of life, to affect change not only in their communities but also around the world and to make a difference.
Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah expressed the government’s appreciation for Webster University’s commitment to delivering high quality tertiary education in Ghana. She mentioned that the government is in the process of creating a Public Private Partnership law in education to unlock access to capital and enhance efforts to produce quality graduates in the country.
In an inspiring commencement speech, Ms. Esther Cobbah, CEO of Strategic Communications Africa Limited, wished the students “courage as you step out of university to pursue your dreams. Be persistent and stay the course, not letting any setbacks deter you. Let not the sacrifices that have brought you thus far be in vain! I know you will be trailblazers for the subsequent generations of Webster graduates!”. She reminded the graduates that African leaders like Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, made huge sacrifices for the realization of their dreams.
“Africans today must not let those sacrifices for our independence be in vain.” She finally motivated the graduates “to use the learning you have acquired at Webster and your God-given capabilities to soar to great heights in the world out there. Africa Rising means You Rising!!”, she concluded.
In addition to the post-graduate MBA and the MA International Relations degrees, Webster University offers bachelor’s degrees in management, media communications and international relations.
