Nurses urged to scale up quality care

Kumasi, May 22, GNA – Dr (Mrs.) Victoria Bam, Head of the Department of Nursing, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has called on health care professionals to scale up quality patient care to ensure optimal outcomes worth the huge cost invested in healthcare delivery.

A proper understanding of health care financing, budgeting, resource allocation and strategic planning to make best use of available resources for cost effectiveness, is an essential prerequisite to make this happen, she said.

The heavy financial burden on health systems brought on by rising incidence of non-communicable diseases and lifestyle-related conditions in the country, coupled with the financial challenges of the National Health insurance scheme, calls for proper cost effective health management, she said.

Dr. Mrs. Bam speaking on ‘Nurses and Midwives: a force for change, care effective, cost effective’ theme for this year’s Nurses Day celebration on Wednesday in Kumasi said such competencies critical in policy making in resource allocation would be provided by healthcare professionals.

‘Nurses and midwives are the largest professionals in the healthcare workforce, are well-positioned to drive these into the healthcare delivery system’ she added.

The event, an annual ritual, is held in line with the Association’s mission to help advance and sustain the Nursing and Midwifery profession by developing the nurse and midwife scientifically to cope with contemporary changes in the health service.

The Ashanti Regional Ghana Registered Nurses Association organized it.

Dr. (Mrs) Bam said ‘costing information is important for the planning and decision making process on how to do better within the constraints of financial, human and other resources.’

Dr. Alexis Nang-Beifubah, the Ashanti Regional Director of Health Service for his part advised nurses and midwives to work as a team at all levels for optimal results in health care delivery in the country.

He said team work together with commitment aimed at best outcomes, would strengthen and improve health care service and systems in every society.

Mr. Kwaku Asante-Krobea, National President of the Association, in an address read for him, urged the government to retain the allowances of trainee nurses and midwives, who he said, fill many roles that represent the deficit created by the sharp nurse/patient ratio.
