Freed at last: Jonathan Mensah available for Ghana

Jonathan Mensah will be eligible to represent the Black Stars of Ghana in June when AFCON qualifiers begin inspite of his four month football ban from the Court of Arbitration for Sports.

The Evian defender was banned from football activities after a ruling from the Court for Arbitration on Sports (CAS) ruled that his transfer from Udinese to the French club in 2011 was illegal because he was not yet a free agent.

The ruling which was based on Article 17 par. 3 of the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players was initially interpreted to mean the player would be ruled out of international football but subsequent clarification has revealed the player will be available to Ghana when they take the field against Mauritius.

This is because according to Article 17 par 3 the sanction is suspended from the final day of the season of the French league and will begin when the league resumes and will not stand in the intervening period, which allows him to be picked by Ghana coach Avram Grant.

Mensah has so far not commented on the ban.
