Last Sunday, the Phobians target of picking a favorable score line in Tunis never happened as they were thrashed 4-0 by Esperance de Tunis in the first leg tie of the final round of the Confederation cup.
Allsports.com.gh made three observations that contributed to Hearts of Oak’s loss in Tunis.
No flood lights training for Hearts of Oak
The officially kick off time for the game was 6pm Tunisian time, however according to information gathered, per the Tunisian climate condition the Sun will only last around 6:30pm which from that time visibility will be a problem so the flood lights at the stadium is used from that time.
However, Hearts of Oak in their final training at the Rades sports stadium, they failed to train under flood lights because during their training the Sun was still on and in the game especially in the second half they played the entire 45minutes under flood lights which automatically affected their play on the field of play.
Poor preparation by Hearts of Oak team
Esperance de Tunis is completely different from the likes of AS Police, Olympique de Ngor and AC Djoliba. The Tunisian club is one of the best clubs on the African continent because of their rich history winning the CAF Champions league 5 times and playing against them you need adequate preparation before battling them.
Hearts of Oak failed to prepare adequately for the game, after Djoliba’s game the Phobians broke camp and they resumed one week ahead of their game against Esperance. Instead of Hearts of Oak setting off to Tunisia early for acclimatization they rather went to Tunisia 4 days for the game which on the game the players of Hearts of Oak struggled to adjust to the weather.
[ii] Prior to kick off and during the game there was a rain fall, Esperance had everything under their control while the Phobians failed to run on the pitch because of the slippery nature of the grass due to the rain.
Herbert Addo’s Tactics
Since the start of the preliminary stages of the Confederation cup, head coach of Hearts of Oak, Herbert Addo in all his games both home and away played the 4:4:2 system but against Esperance it backfired because Esperance playing at home have everything to their advantage as they attack the Phobians more -opening a lot of spaces in the Hearts of Oak defense. Coach Addo’s tactical decision to also attack Esperance by deploying two attackers[Fiamenyo and Foovi] didn’t yield any dividend as the Ghanaian side fell flat on the day by picking 4 balls from their net.
