Lawyer Expresses Worry Over Inhuman Treatment Of Prisoners In Ghana

A private legal practitioner, Lawyer Akrasi, has expresssed worry over inhuman treatment meted out to prisoners all over the country.

He says every prisoner has the right to every facility under chapter 5 of the 1992 constitution of Ghana such as good food, shelter, water and right to life.

He was speaking in an interview on the Royal yeresuadee Morning show with Sir Richmond Antwi Boasiako on the rights of prisoners in the country on royal 89.3 fm.

According to him prisoners are put in prison for reformation but rather end up more hardened during their stay in prison. He said this is contrary to the purpose for the establishment of prison facilities in the country.

Lawyer Akrasi lamented that ‘‘it is sad when you visit prisons such as Nsawam where prisoners are treated like outcasts’’.

He stated emphatically that it is only the right to movement of the prisoner that is restricted but in Ghana they are being denied a lot of things.Lawyer Akrasi has therefore appealed to the Interior Ministry for the expansion of the various prisons all over the country to ensure the safety and health conditions of the victims as well as reformation of their character.
