Worthy gift: Kwadwo Asamoah likely to pick up Champions league medal

Ghana’s Kwadwo Asamoah is likely to pick up a Champions League medal despite his not being named in Juventus’ team since the knockout stage.

The Bianconneri reached the June 6 Berlin final of the prestigious club competition after a 3-2 aggregate win over title holders,Real Madrid and will face another Spanish side Barcelona for the title.

Asamoah has been out of action since November after  he underwent surgery on a troublesome knee problem but played in three of Juventus’ Champions League group games before his absence.

There had been fears in Asamoah’s native Ghana that the player would miss out on becoming the fifth Ghanaian player to lift the trophy.

UEFA’s rules on the presentation of medals stipulate that 40 are given to the winning club and Juventus have used a total of 24 players in the entire tournament including Asamoah.

Regulations of the UEFA Champions League 2012-15 Cycle, Article 5.04, reads:

‘Forty gold medals are presented to the winning club, and forty silver medals to the runner-up. Additional medals may not be produced.’

From that point onward, it is the club’s choice (Essentially meaning its the manager’s choice) to award the medal to any player he/she feels may deserve so. There is certainly no language barring a player who hasn’t played sufficient games or was cup-tied from receiving a medal.
