Two suspected armed robbers believed to be behind the series of attacks on some residents of Teshie and its environs in the Greater Accra Region, have been apprehended by the police. They are alleged to be among a gang of four.
The suspects are 29-year-old Michael Kwabena Rockson, a taxi driver and Eric Boateng aka Kwabla Kwashie, 22.
However, two other accomplices whose names were given as Alhassan and Yaw Isaac are at large and are being hunted by the law enforcement agents.
They are alleged to have been operating at Madina, Teshie, Nungua and Teshie GREDA Estates areas.
A pump action gun, pinch bars and stones were some of the items seized from the suspects.
Briefing the media in Accra, DCOP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, Accra Regional Police Commander, said for some time now there had been concerns about robberies and attacks on innocent residents in certain parts of Teshie.
These robberies, he noted, were wide-spread at Teshie Rasta, Teshie Tebibiano, Agbleza, Okpoi Gonno, GREDA Estates, Fertilizer, Adzorma and its environs.
According to DCOP Tetteh Yohuno, at about 11:30 pm, the gang, onboard a Daewoo taxi with registration number GT 4309-15, attacked the complainant who was returning home from a programme, in front of his gate at GREDA Estates.
Armed with a pump action gun, a cutter and an iron bar, the suspects, DCOP Yohuno said, robbed the victim of his wallet containing unspecified amount of money.
Not satisfied with that, they dragged the victim into his apartment and took away his flat screen television set, wrist watches, three mobile phones, two lap tops, iPads and other valuables, after which they subjected him to severe beatings.
The victim quickly rushed to the Teshie Police Station to lodge a complaint.
DCOP Tetteh Yohuno said based on the information, the patrol team, dispatched to the scene, spotted the said taxi and gave the suspects a hot chase.
When suspects, realizing that the police had closed in on them, abandoned the taxi and attempted fleeing.
However, the police managed to apprehend Eric Boateng.
After some few minutes, Michael Kwabena Rockson also rushed to the station and gave a false report that his taxi cab had been snatched by armed robbers. The police highly suspected him of his involvement in the robbery and got him arrested. During interrogation, he confessed being an accomplice and mentioned one Alhassan and Yaw Isaac as their accomplices.
In their caution statements, the two admitted the crime and confessed that they were responsible for a number of robbery activities at Madina and Teshie Nungua areas.
Further investigations by the police revealed that Rockson, being the ring leader, had been sentenced on two occasions for robbery at Sakumono, near Tema.
Police investigation is still ongoing, and they will all be put before court soon.
