Tamale, May 8, GNA – An ultra-modern Neonatal and Intensive Care Unit (NICU), with 40 beds, has been inaugurated at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) to help provide quality health care to babies.
The facility is fully equipped with a 25-seater conference room and a resource centre, offices for staff, pharmacy, store-rooms, two incubator rooms and kitchen for storing breast milk.
The GH¢405,000 facility was funded by Mobile Telecommunications Network (MTN) Ghana Foundation, which provided GH¢335,000, with Huawei Technologies providing GH¢70,000.
Mrs Cynthia Lumor, Corporate Services Executive of MTN, said at the inauguration on Thursday that the company recognised the critical role of a neonatal centre in reducing child mortality and “this is the main reason the Board of Directors of the MTN Ghana Foundation approved this project.’
She said the facility was crucial, considering the impact it would have on mothers, babies and members of the entire savannah region, stressing; ‘the provision of this essential centre will relieve the anxiety of the parents and health professionals who have to care for pre-term babies.’
She said: ‘MTN has adopted the provision of healthcare as a key focus area because of the considerable evidence that there is a relationship between poverty and inadequate health care.’
Alhaji Limuna Mohammed-Muniru, Northern Regional Minister, said the Government was committed to equipping hospitals in the country to deliver quality healthcare.
He said government would also continue to create the enabling environment for businesses to thrive to enable them to contribute to Ghana’s development through their corporate social responsibility initiatives.
He urged pregnant women to seek early medical treatment at the hospitals instead of resorting to other forms of treatment in the home.
Dr Prosper Akanbong, Chief Executive Officer of TTH, said the new NICU would provide quality care for the over 1,500 neonates and their mothers admitted annually to the unit.
Dr Akanbong said the facility would go a long way to help TTH achieve its vision of becoming a centre of excellence in the provision of quality tertiary healthcare, medical education and research.
He expressed gratitude to MTN Ghana Foundation and Huawei Technologies for the kind gesture.
