The Ghana Health Service, with the National Malaria Control Programme has started the distribution of about 1.3 million treated insecticides mosquito nets throughout the Brong Ahafo Region.
Addressing the media as part of a sensitisation programme at Sunyani, Mrs. Aba Baffoe Wilmot, Medical Entomonologist for the National Malaria Control Programme said the exercise was to replace the expired insecticide nets distributed in 2011, under the universal Hung-Up Project since “the lifespan of every insecticide net is three years of
20 washes from the start of its use.”
According to Mrs. Aba Baffoe Wilmot, “This year’s exercise is based on registration of household members and issuing of coupons to them, after which they are expected to present the coupons at a distribution points in the communities to collect their free mosquito nets.”
Mrs. Aba Wilmot advice the public the public air the net in a shaded area not less than 24 hours before sleeping in it.
“The treated nets are not to be put under sunlight and should not to be washed with detergents in order not to destroy the insecticides in the nets.”
Mrs. Aba Baffoe Wilmot disclosed that, 68 percent of people in the region owns a treated mosquito nets but only 58 percent uses it.
She therefore called on beneficiaries to sleep in their nets to the cause of reducing the rate of malaria cases in the region.
