The mother of gospel musician OJ was a typical Ghanaian. Her dream for her beloved son, known in real life as Michael Oware Sakyi was to become anything but a musician.
But OJ’s dream was to become nothing more than a musician. He wanted to take the career path of his father but his mother who has seen and walked that path hand-in-hand with her husband cannot afford to see her son walk that same path.
That was OJ’s debacle. He loved music with passion and he loved his mother too but his mother hated his passion.
And when he was done with the career announcing, soul inspiring single “Obi nya way3” he locked his mother in a studio and asked her to listen to it.
“She cried. I saw the tears running down her cheeks,” OJ narrated on Personality Profile segment on Lexis Bill’s Drive Time programme on Joy FM Thursday.
It was the first time anybody other than the composer and sound engineer was listening to the song.
That day marked the redemption hour and from then on any music composed by OJ is passed by his mother before it goes into the market.
“And when she says it is not good; i start all over again” OJ testified.
It was a worthwhile conversation, with Lexis, hugely motivational with the Prempeh College old student sharing tales of a life lived by spiritual direction.
From Prempeh College he was led by the spirit to stay home for four years and during this four years he played piano for his local church because there was nobody to do so.
And finally when he decided to enter into the university his colleagues he completed with at Prempeh were all in the final year in the university.
That could have a devastating effect on any other man but not OJ. He was focused in life and on his music.
“Music is not about making a name for yourself but about projecting the name of God,” he said.
The simple man with a huge sense of humour said he looks at life at an angle where nobody is paying attention.
