Asante Kotoko’s quest to draw fans to the Baba Yara Sports Stadium by launching ‘operation fill the stadium for Duncan’ worked to perfection, but there wasn’t tickets for several supporters who went with the intention of getting the chance to cheer their idol club beat Liberty Professionals on Sunday in the First Plus Capital Plus Premier league.
David Duncan’s first game in charge at home recorded Kotoko’s heaviest attendance, however the league champions couldn’t enjoy much monetary wise, because there wasn’t sufficient tickets for the fans, hence several of them went home disappointed.
The General Manager for Kotoko has indicated that the short of ticket was inevitable at that particular time, because the Premier League Board (PLB) made the ticket allocation for the game based on last season’s turn-up and didn’t take into consideration attendance was going shoot-up against Liberty per the nature of the attendance earlier this season.
‘It was very unfortunate on our part that some fans couldn’t get the match to watch, so we lost some monies,’ Opoku Nti told Fox fm.
‘But the situation was no one’s fault, because the PLB in order to help Kotoko avoid losses decided to either stick to last season’s ticket during our game against Liberty in Kumasi or reduce it, because a team pays for all the tickets allocated to them whether the fans turned up or not.
‘And also attendance in the course of this season attendance hasn’t been the best and mostly allocation of tickets is made at the early stage of the season.
‘No one knew at a point in time Duncan would join Kotoko and his presence would influence fans to troop to the stadium to watch our games.
‘Mostly, any time there is shortage of tickets, the National Sports Authority comes in with some old tickets, but they needed to check the amount before handing them over to us and by the time they were done, some minutes had been played and unfortunately our goal came earlier, so some of the fans who were behind the gates failed to enter the stadium.’
Koto face El Eulma in the CAF Champions League on Sunday in Kumasi, following a goalless draw in Algeria three weeks ago.
