Self-Styled Banker Grabbed

A 49-year-old self styled banker, who has defrauded nine unsuspecting victims of over GH¢65,000, has been nabbed by the police.

Kwaku Badu reportedly dressed nicely and posed as a banker, thereby taking undue advantage of people who went to various banks in Kumasi to transact businesses.

Reports say he usually posed as a bank official and offered to assist customers deposit money into their accounts but always ended up bolting with the money.

Kwaku Badu reportedly defrauded several people in banking halls and always managed to escape arrest despite being placed on police wanted list.

Luck, however, eluded him on Friday when he was finally apprehended whilst on the brink of defrauding another unsuspecting person at Unibank, Suame branch.

Kwaku Badu, who is married with five children and resides at Takoradi in the Western Region, is now in the grips of Kumasi police assisting in investigations.

DSP Aba Afari, the Crime Officer of the Kumasi Central Police Division, said nine people had identified Badu as the person who defrauded them at various banks.

DSP Aba said on December 10, 2014 Badu defrauded a person who was depositing GH¢20,000 at the Royal Bank and fled the scene immediately.

She said the victim reported the matter to the police and in the course of investigations, the CCTV camera at the bank showed Badu’s face.

The police then declared Badu wanted but despite the wild chase to arrest him, Badu still managed to defraud more people.

On June 5 last year, this same Badu reportedly defrauded another victim who transacted business at Unibank in Kumasi.

He again defrauded another customer of SG Ghana, Adum branch, of an amount of GH¢75,000 on March 12, 2015 and escaped arrest.

From SG Ghana, he dashed to the Suame branch of Unibank to defraud another person but luck eluded him as he was finally apprehended.

DSP Aba said nine people had so far identified Badu as the person who defrauded them in various banking halls.

She admonished other people who had fallen prey to Badu’s illegal activities in the city to rush to the police and identify him.

DSP Aba also urged the public to be careful whenever they enter banking halls to transact businesses so as to avoid falling prey to such criminals.
