Dakar, Mar. 22, GNA – Ghana’s Black Satellites avenged a group stage defeat to Mali in style after beating the Eaglets 3-1 to earn bronze at the African Youth Championship (AYC), in Senegal.
A brace from Yaw Yeboah and one by Clifford Aboagye ensured Ghana walked onto the medal list after 90minutes.
Ghana went ahead on the 23minutes through Yeboah with a rebound following an earlier huge drive from Clifford Aboagye outside the box that greased the post with goalkeeper Ibrahim Troare well beaten.
The Satellites’ goalkeeper, Kwame Baah, keeping the post for the first time at the tournament was called to duty on the 39th minutes when Alassane Diallo sent a precise half volley aiming at goal.
Baah soared, and despite struggling with his first attempt, the 16-year old goalkeeper who plays for Heart of Lions kept a firm grip to keep Ghana’s lead intact.
Five minutes after the hour mark, Yeboah grabbed a brace when he darted to beat an offside trap by the Malian defence to slot home from a close range and double Ghana’s advantage.
The Black Satellites grew in confidence after the goal, pushing the losers to clear up in succession in search of an emphatic third goal that seemed beckoning.
Ghana’s effort was to be rewarded in the 71st minute after the Black Satellites survived a Malian invasion, cleared their lines and ballooned one into the middle.
The Black Satellites turned defence into attack and Aboagye got to the end of a pass, pushed his way through the middle from the left flank before squeezing a low one that beat Traore for Ghana’s third.
Mali pulled a goal back with six minutes to end the match through Malick Toure who caught goalkeeper Baah off his lines to poach home a consolation moments after Ghana failed to score at the other end of the field.
Mali quickly turned the heat on Ghana and earned a penalty a minute on when an attempt to defend a set piece saw a defender handle the ball in the box.
Substitute Hamidou Traore stepped forward to effect what could be Mali’s second goal within a minute but Baah timed well to save from the blocks to endear himself to his players and end the game on high.
