‘Killing the league’: Abra-Appiah blasts Avram Grant for local players snub

Welbeck Abra-Appiah, Chairman of Ghana’s Premier League Board is angry with Avram Grant after the Black Stars coach could find a place in the 22-man national team squad which plays two international friendlies next week.

Ashantigold goalkeeper, Fatau Dauda is the only player based in the domestic league to be named by the Israeli tactician for the Black Stars friendly games in France against fellow West Africans, Senegal on March 28 and Mali three days later.

And the local league chief has bemoaned the overly overlooking of talents playing in the First Capital Plus Premier League, Mr. Abra-Appiah insisting that it does not help the bid to market and develop the Ghanaian football league.

‘It is very unfortunate to hear that the list has been released with only one local based player,’ Abra-Appiah told Accra based Citi FM

‘This is a friendly game and it’s very important that we open the doors to those playing in the domestic scene, that will also encourage them,” the PLB boss added.

Mr. Abra-Appiah also believes a lot more players may get a look in should the national team trainer make more time to watch more games in the local league as spelt out in his employment contract.

‘I am really down with the selection but I guess Grant just saw one game and that is not enough,” Abra-Appiah bemoaned.

He added: “In reality most of these foreign based players are bench warmers and I don not see why a few of our guys here can not fit in.’ Follow @thedonplato
