Workshop underway to plan Cocoa Sector

Accra, March 19, GNA – The Ghana Cocoa Board has opened the second Cocoa Sector Scenario Planning Exercise to receive input for the development of the new Ghana Cocoa Sector Development Strategy Document in Accra.

The exercise is also to identify priority interventions and actions for interested stakeholders to know how to support the country’s Cocoa sector.

Dr Stephen Opuni, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), COCOBOD, addressing the opening ceremony of the two-day workshop, said the exercise offered a unique opportunity for the leadership of COCOBOD to articulate its vision for transforming and modernising the Cocoa sector over the next 10 years.

He said the exercise should provide elements to complete the revision of the Second Cocoa Sector Development Strategy Document II.

‘It will also provide insight into future engagement between COCOBOD, development partners, and other key industry stakeholders,’ he explained.

He said the result from the workshop would provide analysis and options for the management of COCOBOD and the government on the way forward for the cocoa sector.

Dr Opuni said Ghana was on the verge of developing a new vision for the Cocoa Sector and his vision would incorporate emerging issues such as ethical and sustainable production practices.

He said COCOBOD in collaboration with the Forestry Commission had started working towards what was termed: ‘Climate Smart Cocoa Production’, in an effort to reduce deforestation and boost Cocoa production.

The CEO said the Management had come to the realisation that Climate Change had become a major factor in Cocoa production.

He said the Cocoa sector had witnessed tremendous successes in the last few years but these had come with challenges such as the effects of illegal mining and competition from crops.

He said the Global Cocoa Industry was undergoing significant changes with new patterns emerging in cocoa production, processing, and confectionary consumption.
