An international human rights crusader, Raphael Godlove Ahenu Jr, has called on world leaders especially UN to pressure on El Salvador to espouse its human rights commitments and free all women jailed for pregnancy complications.
Mr Ahenu who is safe abortion advocate advocating for women access to safe abortion across the globe further asked El Salvador government to repeal its restrictive abortion laws to make way for women in that country to have access to safe abortion services.
Speaking during a man demonstration in Sunyani, Ghana to canvas for support to free El Salvador women jailed for pregnancy complications, he described the action as inhumane in this contemporary world.
According to him, currently 15 out 17 women who upon accessing healthcare facilities as a result of miscarriages, stillbirths or other life-threatening obstetrical complications, were accused of having undergone an abortion, charged with goaded homicide and received prison sentences of up to 40 years in that country.
Mr Ahenu Jr. who is the Founder/CEO of Global Media Foundation, human rights media advocacy organization further said additional women are incarcerated and on trial, facing similar charges and sentences.
El Salvador has one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the world, with abortion criminalized in all cases, even when the woman’s life or health is at risk.
One of the most serious consequences of the total ban is the incarceration and wrongful imprisonment of numbers of women who have suffered pregnancy-related complications and miscarriages.
Mr Ahenu has already launched a campaign dubbed: “Operation Free El Salvador Women” to collect 1000 signatures from Ghana in solidarity with the imprisoned women and will present same to El Salvador government.
