I was sacked because I wanted Betty Mould in court – Amidu

Ex-Attorney General Martin Amidu has revealed late President John Mills kicked him out of office because he wanted to use his predecessor Betty Mould-Iddrisu as a prosecution witness in the controversial ‘Woyome Gate.’

Breaking his silence about his dismissal, Amidu said: ‘I had suggested that Mrs. Betty Mould-Iddrisu should be persuaded to be a prosecution witness in lieu of prosecution. The Government disagreed, so I was removed from office.’

Businessman Alfred Woyome walked free last Thursday after winning a criminal case against the state over a Gh¢51.2 million judgment debt he received when Mrs Mould-Iddrisu was serving as AG.

Mrs Mould-Iddrisu, who is currently serving as a national executive member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), has told  Starr News she did nothing untoward.

Having lost the criminal case, the incumbent attorney general Mrs Marrieta Brew Appiah-Oppong has served notice of appeal, but Woyome has called for her resignation because she previously represented a company Astro-Invest in the same case and managed to win the Cedi equivalent of $1 million for the firm.

Amidu supports the stance of Woyome.
In a statement to the media, Amidu, who describes himself as ‘Citizen Vigilante’, said: ‘The Entry of Judgment filed by the Attorney-General, Mrs. Brew Appiah-Oppong at the Supreme Court after the above clear declarations and order was selective and omitted the declarations affecting Austro-Invest and the then Attorney General, Mrs Betty Mould-Iddrisu, whose conduct in facilitating the payment of the Gargantuan over GH₵51million were also declared unconstitutional. Woyome and I opposed the selective entry of judgment in our respective affidavits to the entry of judgment. The Supreme Court agreed with me and struck out the offending entry of judgment for non-compliance with the decision of the Supreme Court.

‘The perception I have come away with in my handling of the Constitutional cases against the Attorney General, Waterville, and Woyome/Austro-Invest is that the John Dramani Mahama NDC Government under its Attorney General, Mrs. Brew Appiah-Oppong has at every step done everything in its power to impede the success of the cases. I had made it clear to the Mills/Mahama Government as its Attorney General that no prosecution in the scam involving the over GH₵51million will succeed by targeting Woyome alone without Waterville, Austro-Invest, Samuel Nerquaye-Tetteh, the Chief State Attorney whose spouse EOCO reveal had received GH₵400,000 from Woyome while he was handling the case as an Attorney for the Government, and others.

‘I had suggested that Mrs. Betty Mould-Iddrisu should be persuaded to be a prosecution witness in lieu of prosecution. The Government disagreed, so I was removed from office. But Woyome did not walk into the Bank of Ghana with an AK 47 or a Bazooka to take the over GH₵51million from the Government of Ghana. Mrs. Brew Appiah-Oppong had all the opportunity to have done the proper professional thing upon becoming the Attorney General and assuming the prosecution of the case in spite of her past association with Austro-Invest at Lithur Brew and Co. She failed woefully in this regard as the evidence before the nation in this matter to-day demonstrates.’
