DRAMA: GIS depicts Tony Award-Winning Musical ‘In The heights’

The Ghana International School will on Saturday 21 st and 22nd March stage a musical adaptation at the national theatre to highlight life in the rural suburbs of New York in the United States of America.

The event which is in its 8 th edition will afford students of GIS the opportunity to explore other areas of their academic life. The music drama explores three days in the characters’ lives in the New York City Latino neighborhood of Washington Heights. The score features hip-hop, salsa, meringue and soul music.

In the Hispanic community of Manhattan’s Washington Heights, the musical drama will tell the story of bodega owner Usnavi who is dating Vanessa, who works in a beauty salon.

He dreams of opening a bar in his home country, the Dominican Republic. Nina loves Benny, a shy young man who has worked for Nina’s parents for years, but her father opposes their union because he wants Nina to finish her education at Stanford University.

She doesn’t want her father to bankrupt himself paying for the expensive school, but her father is prepared to sell his car-service business. “Abuela” Claudia, who raised Usnavi after the death of his parents, wins $96,000 in a numbers game.

Lucia King who plays the role of Nina tells myjoyonline.com she is ready to mount the stage and thrill the expected audience. “This is the first time I’m doing such a thing but I am ready to give my all to ensure a successful play and so are my other colleagues,” Lucia added.

Marketing and communication coordinator of the Ghana International School, Phoebe Acolatse says the idea behind the musical drama is to bring out students who will fit into all spheres of life. She said beyond academic pursuit the school wants to explore other curricular activities to enable the students fully discover themselves. “We have students with different compositions so this is a great way to showcase their talent to a large audience,” she indicated.

The event will take place at the national theater at 6:30pm each night.
