Management of Cosmos Seafood Limited, a Korean company at the heavy Industrial area in Tema, last Friday sacked 57 workers who embarked on the demonstration against management recently over poor conditions of service.
About 40 of the workers, mostly females, at Cosmos Seafood, a leading manufacturer of high-quality and affordable canned seafood, are also on their way out of the company for their alleged involvement in the demonstration.
management of Cosmos Seafood is not budging, despite interventions by the Union of Industry, Commerce, and Finance Workers (UnICoF) and Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU) to get the 57 reinstated.
Some of the workers last monday for the second time laid down their tools and prevented management from entering the premises of the company as they fought for their sacked colleagues and better conditions of service.
Clad in red dresses and bands to exhibit their displeasure, the workers chanted war songs to express their frustration.
the workers were peeved because they claimed that management had refused to pay their pension benefits – Social Security and national Insurance trust (SnnIt) contributions – for the past three years and other working allowances due them.
according to them, albeit the company does not have buses to convey them to and from work, management does not pay their transport allowances and rather threatened them with dismissal whenever they raised concerns.
They have appealed to the custodians of the country’s labour laws to make them (laws) functional in order to protect workers, and called on the government to protect the interest of its citizens, who work in the foreign firms.
