Attorney-General (A-G) and Minister of Justice Marrietta Brew-Oppong has described as “completely false”, an accusation by a triumphant businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome who claims the A-G benefitted from a ₵51 million judgement debt and thus has no moral right to prosecute him.
In a statement issued Monday, Woyome is claiming Marrietta Brew-Oppong and her firm “benefitted approximately ₵1,474,393 from the said judgment debt you now so much criminalise and want me jailed for”.
His accusation comes fresh after he floored Government in a three-year criminal trial which ended last week. The judge dismissed the case saying the prosecution were unable to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Woyome defrauded the State by false pretense and willfully caused financial loss to the State.
However, in an immediate response, the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General says she has done nothing wrong in representing a client to get Woyome to pay back a debt.
She says her firm represented Ray Smith to obtain the payment of $982,929 which Woyome owed him in 2011.
“Woyome borrowed money, $982,929 from Ray Smith….it was a debt he owed Ray Smith. [Woyome] took the money in and about 2011, [Ray Smith] instructed my firm and he issued a writ and Alfred Agbesi Woyome paid a debt. It is as simple as that” , she told Joy News.
Woyome also claims, Marrietta Brew-Oppong finds herself in a conflict of interest situation after representing a firm Austro-Invest to go after him to claim a share of the controversial judgement debt.
On November 26, 2011, Austro-Invest represented by Lithur and Brew Chambers initiated a suit at the High Court in Accra against Woyome claiming they deserve a share of GH¢51.2 million judgment debt.
But Marietta’s former law firm after some investigations advised their client Austro-Invest to discontinue pursuing Woyome for the money because his claim was fraudulent.
Austro-Invest took her firm’s advice.
She maintains Woyome is out there to cause “mischief” after she expressed determination to appeal the ruling that set Woyome free of criminal action.
“I definitely will not resign…I have been given a mandate by the President and I intend to fulfill that mandate”, she insisted.
The Justice Minister says she has “the full support of the president” to pursue an appeal against a ruling that went shockwaves across the country.
