Tuna SHS students each fined ¢122 for riots

Each student of Tuna SHS in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Northern Region has been slapped with a fine of ¢122 following violent conduct that left school properties completely destroyed.

The students, accompanied by their parents and guardians have also been made to sign a bond to be of good behavior.

The school was shut down after angry students went on rampage and destroyed vehicles, the school’s computer laboratory, teachers’ bungalow and other property.

The students were protesting the decision by a teacher to punish a female student for dressing indecently.

The teacher was alleged to have stripped the girl naked as part of the punishment.

That got the students angry and they went on rampage destroying several properties and raiding others as well.

In the raiding of the computer lab for instance, laptops allocated to the school have been misappropriated. Out of about 40 to 50 laptops, the police have only been able to retrieve three so far.

The police intervened by arresting about 38 students and later granting them bail.

The school was closed down, the Board of Governors of the school was dissolved and a committee constituted to investigate the cause of the chaos.

Joy News correspondent Rafiq Salam said the committee has finished its investigation and will submit its report to the new Board of Governors which will be inaugurated on Tuesday.

The committee is said to have estimated the cost of the violence at GHS170,000
