Sports 101: Hosting AFCON is not rocket science, Mahama Ayariga roars

Ghana’s sports minister Mahama Ayariga has squashed claims of a misplaced priority with Ghana hosting the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations claiming hosting the AFCON is not rocket science.

The minister made his point outlining how CAF were confident Ghana could have hosted the 2015 edition of the tournament in just three months after Morocco had pulled out due to the Ebola epidemic.

Ayariga said that Ghana had sent a full report of the state of the facilities that would aid in hosting the tournament in a bid to land the 2017 edition of the AFCON.

Speaking to AllSports.com.gh editor Godfred Akoto Boafo, Ayariga said:

‘In terms of infrastructure, Ghana could have easily hosted the tournament. In terms of hotels to host the teams, that’s no problem.’

When Ayariga was again questioned about how easily he had made hosting the Africa Cup of Nations look, Mahama Ayariga confidently said:

‘This [Ghana hosting the Africa Cup of Nations] is not rocket science.’

The minister also stressed on his stance on the decision with what he had seen in Equatorial Guinea.

Despite him admitting some of the state facilities might need a few repairs here and there, that would in no way affect Ghana hosting an Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
