Secrets. Kevin Prince Boateng and the secret clause


Schalke 04  and their star midfielder Kevin Prince Boateng are a mystery these days. Two weeks ago, the men of Roberto Di Matteo lost against their arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund in the so-called Revier-Derby  1-4. A week later, they smashed Hoffenheim 3-1 and only a few days ago Real Madrid was surprised by what is now one of the most unpredictable sides in Europe.

Before the match in Madrid, Schalke boss Clemens Tönnies sent a text message to Germany saying: ‘If our boys have courage today, we can do something tonight!’ Nobody believed a word of it, but his prediction nearly became true when the Royal Blues beat the Royal Whites 4-3 at Bernabeu.

The biggest winner of the game was manager Di Matteo, who proved for the first time that he has more in stock than just a solid defensive system. But the biggest loser was none other than superstar Kevin-Prince Boateng. The Ghanaian midfielder has never been undisputed at Schalke, but most commentators acknowledge that he played an important role at reaching the Champions League Qualification last season.

However, this season, his ongoing physical difficulties and his performances don’t really match with his pronounced leadership claims at the club. 19-year-old talent Max Meyer has taken his place after some great performances during the last weeks.

Even if KPB will be in the starting eleven against Hertha Berlin on Saturday , everything is now pointing towards farewell. The only problem?

 Boateng’s contract at Schalke runs until summer 2016.

And that’s not even the whole story. As reported by German newspaper BILD, there is a secret clause in Boateng’s contract according to which his stay at Schalke will be prolonged for another year if he plays a total of 70 games within three years. At the moment, he is at 55 games.

For Schalke, all cards are now on the table. It is manager’s Horst Heldt’s turn two decide: Sell Boateng now, or keep him for two more years. But despite all the assertions, one can guess what will happen…
