Accra, March 11, GNA – The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), has offered a $200,000 worth of scholarship to 12 sportsmen and women in five disciplines through the Olympic Solidarity to ready for the 2016 Olympics Games in Rio, Brazil.
The scholarship forms part of the GOC’s goal of assisting elite athletes proposed by their National Federations for their preparations and qualification for Rio 2016.
According to the GOC president, Francis Dodoo, Ghana had never received more than four International Olympic Committee (IOC), Scholarships prior to this development.
The scholarship provides athletes access to appropriate training facilities, spending money, and limited travel costs to Olympic qualification competitions.
The beneficiaries are Commonwealth Games bronze medalists in judo and boxing, Razak Mumuni Abugiri and Abdul Wahid Omar.
It also include athletics quartet, Joyner Owusu-Agyapong, Mathilde Boateng, Robert Matey and Tim Abeyie who helped Team Athletics to equal Ghana’s record haul at the African Athletics Championship in Marrakech, Morocco.
The rest are Judoka, Sandra Szogedi, Badminton player, Daniel Sam, boxing duo Sulemanu Tetteh and Jesse Lartey. The US Open Taekwondo Championships participants David Koney and Terrance Tetteh Asare complete the list.
The Olympic scholarship starts from January 1, and will be divided into separate terms, each running for a four-month period up to August 31, 2016.
The scholarships will only be renewed at the end of each term subject to performance, World Anti-Doping code and the conditions set by the GOC and the respective Federations.
