Maxwell Kofi Jumah, the former NPP Member of Parliament for Asokwa says the arrogance and incompetence of the Chairman of the Electoral Commission is the main cause of the botched district level elections.

According to him, the elections would have been successfully held if Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan respected the laws of the country instead of insisting on doing things his own way; causing financial loss to the state.

“Wasting this huge amount of money to run an election and at the end of the day it has been cancelled by the court shows how incompetent and arrogant the chairman is. In fact, he must be sanctioned to serve as a deterrent to his successor when he retires.

“The peace we have in this country is not because of the EC, but because of the responsibility of the two main political parties in the country; so to me, he has done nothing but just to waste our money. The man should be charged for causing financial loss to the state,” he stated.

The EC is requesting an additional Ghc90 million to run the District Assembly elections. Government released a total of Ghc327 million to the electoral body to run the polls, but the whopping sum has gone down the drain after the Supreme Court canceled the local level elections.

A 7-member panel of Justices on Friday, February 27, 2015, in a unanimous decision, said the elections were unconstitutional.

Parliament summoned the EC boss Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 to explain what went wrong.
