Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawyer Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie has called on government to cause Electoral Commission (EC) Chairman and his staff to pay Ghc327 million cost they incurred in the botched District Assembly elections.

This move, the former NPP scribe said, is to serve as a deterrent to other persons entrusted with national offices to learn to be more responsible and accountable in the discharge of their duties.

“If there is any debt, then Afari Gyan and the commissioners must be made to pay for that because he chose to ignore all advice offered him…,” he said.

Dr. Afari Gyan told Parliament yesterday that out of Ghc327 million, the commission spent Ghc317 million for the botched District Level Elections.

The commission, he added, will need Ghc90 million more to organize another election after the Supreme Court nullified the elections.

In an interview on Adom News, Sir John insisted that Afari Gyan is taking the taxpayer for a ride and must be stopped.

He says Afari Gyan and his commissioners should be made to pay back the wasted money.
