M’bour, Mar. 9, GNA – Black Satellite coach, Sellas Tetteh has said his charges wasted opportunities despite beating South Africa 2-0 in the Group B opener at the Africa Youth Championship (AYC), underway in Senegal.

Ghana began her campaign on a head start following the victory over the Amajitas at the Caroline Faye Stadium, in M’bour on Monday.

An own goal by South African, Thamsanqa   Masiya and another from   Benjamin Tetteh handed Ghana three points, her first opening win under coach Sellas Tetteh since 2009.

Tetteh told GNA Sports that ‘The boys wasted a lot of chances that could have given us more goals. But it is the first time my team is winning a first game in my history with the competition and every coach will be pleased.”

The Satellites, yet again confirmed their superiority over the Amajita, dominating every department in the match that saw the losers ending with a man less following Aubrey Modiba second yellow card early in the second half.

Despite failing to let the numerical advantage count, Tetteh had kind words for his opponents. ‘South Africa organised very well in the second half and I give them credit for that. They proved they are a good side.

‘It was not an easy game nor win despite the result which i think is ideal. We worked very hard for this and it is a good thing we got the expected results. We are motivated by the results to do better”.

Ghana, perennial favourites of the tournament and winners   in 1993, 1999 and 2009, are chasing a fourth continental glory at the biennial   tournament of eight teams.

The Satellites will next play Zambia on Thursday, before wrapping up the group against   Mali on Sunday, in the tournament that serves the qualifiers for Africa’s representatives at the next World Youth Championship (WYC), in New Zealand in May.
