Women have all been urged to join the call for gender equality in order to achieve their aim instead of leaving it for only the elite because most women are themselves important catalyst for change.

This was made known by madam Jane Kwapong, eastern regional director of department of gender at World women’s day celebration in Kwabeng in the Atiwa district on the theme: ” Breaking barriers towards gender equality and women’s empowerment”.

According to her, women are major contributors to development of the world, and in Ghana, they are the bedrock of families and have contributed significantly to the growth and economic development of our country. She said eventhough enrollment of girls in primary schools have increased, the dropout rate is also on the rise especially in rural areas.

Madam Kwapong expressed worry of some culture and traditions that are not helpful to the girl-child, like child marriages, trokosi, high incidence of teenage pregnancy among others and therefore called for change of some of them. ” Women in politics and decision making has not changed as out of 270 MPs, only 29 are women representing 10.5 percent” she added.

Regional director of Ghana Association of Teachers Ladies society(GNAT-LAS), madam Beatrice Gyedu commended women for their hardwork over the years and also urged them to do more to be recognised at their places of work and wthin their community. She tasked women not to allow themselves to be intimidated by men but stand firm in their decisions and also appealed to men to always support and encourage women who have the ambition of fighting forward.

Mr. John Gyimah Amamoo, regional GNAT secretary, encouraged female teachers to access the Teachers’ fund to enable them venture into other businesses that can bring extra money. He challenged teachers not to just stay at home after school hours but rather do other things to support their family at all times.

Mr. Amamoo also urged men to respect and support their wives and female families in their dream to attain higher positions wherever they may find themselves.
