An economist, Dr Kofi Amoah, has described Ghana’s AFCON 2017 bid as a misplaced priority, it has been reported.

Ghana is vying for the hosting rights for AFCON 2017, but Dr Amoah believes it is a waste of time, especially after the country failed to make good use of the massive infrastructure put up for the 2008 edition, which Ghana hosted.

Dr Amoah who was Chairman of Local Organising Committee for that tournament was quoted by sportscrusader.com as saying: “Ghana going for the bid in 2017 AFCON is a misplaced priority.”

He added: “Some of the good things which were supposed to come have not materialized. I think it is suicidal and it is criminal not to finish the investment of the people’s money and then go in for another tournament.

“Let’s do first things first and I think it is not proper for us to go in for this tournament.

“The huge edifice of gargantuan investments is rotting away and we’ve not been able to manage them well.

“We need to hand these investments into competent hands to ensure we get the needed returns from it rather than leaving them and going to host another tournament.”

Ghana is in a three-horse race with Gabon and Algeria for the AFCON 2017 hosting rights.
