Three ECG staff accused of stealing 86 transformers

Three staff members of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) are facing trial for their role in the theft of 86 transformers belonging to the company.

The officials, whose names were given as Eric Yaw Darko, Perfect Ama Agbo and Samuel Kofi Frimpong are part of five staff members interdicted after the theft was discovered last July.

The transformers worth over $500,000 are said to have been secretly moved out of the Tema warehouse of the company over a period of one year.

The transformers were taken one after the other to escape detection. Joy NEWS checks reveal it took a long time to detect because any time the internal auditors ran checks, the workers brought the transformers into stock.

Four transformers have been retrieved and the BNI is looking to establish the whereabouts of the other transformers.

ECG has since taken some key security measures, including installing security cameras and the recruitment of a professionally trained security officer to man the store.
