Africa U-20 Championship: Sellas Tetteh targets World Cup qualification

Sellas Tetteh has set his team a minimum target of booking a second successive FIFA Under 20 World Cup ticket ahead of the kick off of the CAF Under 20 Championship in Senegal.

The championship kicks off on Sunday with Ghana being one of eight countries vying for four World Cup slots as well as the trophy at stake.

But Coach Tetteh, a former winner of the African and World titles, says winning the trophy comes second in terms of his team’s ambitions for the tournament.

“Our first objective is to qualify for the World Cup. We want to be among the best four and then we can start thinking about the trophy,” Sellas told www.ghanafa.org in Mbour, Senegal.

“It will be disappointing if we don’t qualify for the World Cup but we shall work very hard and we hope to do very well and achieve our target,”

Coach Tetteh is confident he has assembled the best crop of players capable of doing very well, but he reckons the team must continue to work hard considering the challenge ahead.

“I’m very confident in the team I have assembled. I have been with them for some time now and I know their difficulties and challenges; their good points and their positive points. If I wasn’t confident in them them, I wouldn’t have assembled them.

“But we need to keep working hard. We all know how football is; it is a game which is very difficult to decide but we believe that we have worked very hard and we are ready. We have to keep working hard and if we do, we believe that we would be among the best.”

The Black Satellites will kick off their campaign in Group B on Monday against South Africa in Mbour before facing Mali and Zambia.

The top two teams of each group will progress to the semi finals and also represent Africa at the Fifa Under 20 World Cup later this year.
