The Police Administration has arrested five persons, including two policemen, at various locations in connection with the recent reports of police recruitment fraud.
The suspects were paraded during a media briefing by the Director- General, Public Affairs Department of the Police Service, DCOP David Nenyi Ampah Benin, in Accra.
The revelation was contrary to the report said to have been given to parliamentarians by the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Alhassan.
The IGP had reportedly told the MPs that about 14 persons had been arrested by the police in connection with the fraudulent police recruitment exercise.
IGP Mohammed Alhassan made the assertion when he and his team of police officers appeared before Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee on Tuesday.
DCOP Ampah Benin named the suspects as Richard Harrison, a 30- year-old unemployed who was arrested at Adentan near Accra on March 2, 2015.
Harrison was alleged to have collected GH¢4,200 from one Ashrifa Sukuru with a pledge that he (Harrison) would enlist Ashirifa’s brothers, Ashirifa Jirlima and Sukuru Dawuda, into the Ghana Police Service.
The second suspect, PW/Const. Ruth Agyiri, 27, and stationed at Koforidua in the Eastern Region, allegedly collected GH¢1,500 from one Eric of Ashaiman under the pretext of helping his (Eric’s) brother – one Kwabena – to be enlisted into the Service.
Pastor Paul Danso was arrested at Tarkwa Atuabo on March 3, 2015, for allegedly collecting various sums of money from people at Atuabo and its environs.
The fourth suspect, G/CpL Gideon Sarpong of the Police Visibility Unit, Takoradi , was also nabbed on March 3, 2015 for having been mentioned by Pastor Paul Danso as the one who asked him to collect the money.
DCOP/Rev Ampah Benin mentioned Amos Brown, 40 years old and radio presenter at Silver Radio, Takoradi, as another suspect who was busted on March 4, 2015 for allegedly collecting various sums of money from 40 people in Takoradi under the pretext of helping them to be recruited into the Service.
The police chief indicated that the Police Taskforce, under the Chairmanship of DCOP Bright Oduru of the Police Training College, Tesano, was handling the case and would soon arraign them before court once investigations were completed.
Rev Ampah Benin urged members of the public to reject any invitation for recruitment, stressing that the Police Service was not embarking on any recruitment exercise.
The Police Administration had earlier met with journalists and confirmed the news of the recruitment fraud as well as the list of previous perpetrators.
