Hunger Project commends Ghana

Accra, March 3, GNA – Ms Asa Skogstrom Feldt, President of the Hunger Project has commended Ghana for achieving half of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s) of reducing hunger and poverty ahead of the 2015 deadline.

She said currently the country is working on the remaining MDG’s which is targeted at reducing STD’s and to achieve the African goal of ending hunger and poverty by 2025.

Ms Skogstrom Feldt made the statement when she paid a courtesy call on Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur at the Flagstaff House in Accra.

The Hunger Project is an International Non-governmental organization (NGO) headquartered in New York with branches in 22 countries worldwide and in eight African countries.

Since its inception in Ghana in 1996, the NGO has been involved in the capacity building of communities towards the sustainable end of hunger and poverty through self-reliance for productive and health living.

In 1993 Former President Flt Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings won the Hunger Project’s Africa Prize for Leadership for the Sustainable End of Hunger in 1993.

The Hunger Project in recognition of that achievement awarded him a cash prize of US$50,000.

Former President Rawlings donated the cash prize as seed money to sponsor the establishment of the University for Development Studies (UDS), which now has campuses in the three Northern Regions.

Ms Skogstrom Feldt also stated that, the Hunger Project since its beginning in 1996 has seen a lot of progress in terms reducing hunger and poverty among the people.

She said the long experience of the NGO has been to interact with the people at the grassroots and the rural areas to create a sustainable self-reliant vibrant community living in dignity and having access to all the basic needs.

She said their key points of interaction had been to support and fashion out the sustainable way forward.

‘We have learnt that putting people in the driver’s seat for their own change is the way forward’ she added.

Ms Skogstrom Feldt further stated the NGO is ready to step up its cooperation and partnership with government to change the mindset of the people to achieve the targeted aim.

Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur on his part stated that government had made significant progress in the MDG’s and that it is only left with sanitation and the environment to achieve all the MDG’s.

He explained that the government has made special efforts to reduce the problem of sanitation by instituting the National Sanitation Day to ensure that the MDG’s are met.

He called for the cooperation of the Hunger project to help reverse the challenges that the country was facing. ย ย

Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur also called for the re-direction of the various districts to target rural communities with fewer resources to enhance development in that area.

He called for continued support to ensure food security, which he said, was the most important element in the whole development agenda.

‘If people are secured in terms of food then they can have time to do other things themselves’ he said.

He urged the Hunger Project to continue supporting the rural areas to produce more food for the people, adding that, part of the government plan is to ensure that food produced is evacuated to the market centres.
