Chairman of the Black Stars management committee George Afiyie, is holding the Ghanaian public response for the sacking of former coach Kwesi Appiah.
Appiah, became the first indigenous coach to lead the Black Stars to the world cup after an almost flawless qualifying campaign which included an unforgettable thumping of Africa giants Egypt 6-1 in Kumasi.
His team however also made history by becoming the first Ghana side to crash out at the world cup group stages since the nation made its debut in 2006, with a round of 16 appearance in Germany and a historical quarter final birth fours later in South Africa.
High profile player revolt which infamously led to Sulley Muntari and Kevin Prince Boateng copping up indefinite suspensions from the nation teams meant Kwesi Appiah had to cord on cautious grounds.
But a disappointing start to the Africa cup of nation’s qualifiers which saw Ghana play out a 1-1 drawn game against Uganda in Kumasi and a not so convincing 2-3 victory away to Togo in Lome was the last straw which broke the camel’s back.
But Afriyie says Ghanaians were to blame for Appiah’s axing.
“When we decided to get a technical director for Kwesi Appiah, some Ghanaians stood up and vehemently kicked against the idea,” Afriyie told Accra based Happy FM
“They were even saying that the technical director was coming to take over hs job.”
“I want to state emphatically that football has moved from the era where you hold the hand of your assistant coach and say only the two of us are in charge of the general performance of the team.”
“That was why when Avram Grant came, he told us he will need a physical trainer and a video analyst for the AFCON and we agreed because that is in line with the modern trend of the game.”
Ghana put the disappointment of the world cup behind them and reached the final of the cup of nations in Equatorial Guinea but lost in a dramatic penalty shoot-out against the Ivory Coast.
