Police Recruits Swindled

Five persons have been arrested in connection with a fraudulent police recruitment exercise in the country. The five are currently assisting with police investigations into the fraud.

Hundreds of people issued with fake recruitment letters by some fraudsters are stranded at various police training depots in the country.

Some of the victims who turned up at the Police Training Depot in Kumasi with their enlistment letters for training were told no such training was being offered.

Over 200 ‘new recruits’ sat on their luggage in front of the police school at Patase gnashing their teeth, a Joy FM report said.

The victims claimed they received letters directing them to report at the training school on Saturday.

But authorities turned them away saying they did not have any such communication of their coming for training.

According to Joy FM’s report, the authorities said the letters were fake.

Some of the victims said they had no money to return to their respective places. They came from Accra, the Eastern Region and the northern parts of the country.

A police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he nearly fell victim to the fraud.

He said someone claiming he could help his brother secure admission into the police training school asked him for GH¢5,000 for that purpose.

He added that he nearly paid the money but a colleague’s counsel saved him.

It is obvious that many of the victims have been made to part with large sums of money
