Mr Gideon Commeh, the Programme Coordinator of the Ghana Youth Environmental Movement (GYEM) has called on the government to develop youth capacity in renewable energy.
He said this would enhance entrepreneurial and innovative interventions for the youth in the future.
Mr Commeh, who made the call at a general assembly of the Youth Volunteers for the Environmental (YVE), a non-profit youth association, also suggested to that the government focuses on a strategy to improve access to solar energy for households whilst industries use the national grid.
He advised the youth to take advantage of renewable energy opportunities outlined by the Ministry of Energy to reduce over dependence on government for jobs.
Mr Wilson Adzawlo, the Programme Coordinator for YVE said his organisation was focused on advocacy and building capacities of the youth in renewable energy and energy efficiency through its five-year Clean Energy for Africa (CLENA) Project, which is ongoing in 18 African countries, including Ghana.
He said: “Developing knowledge and skills in renewable energy, building careers, increasing knowledge and creating jobs in the sector can help improve access to alternatives and reduce over dependence on the national grid in the future.”
Mr Adzawlo asked Ghanaians to be conscious of energy efficiency practices to save energy.
Mrs Gifty Amamesor Doe, a Board Member of YVE also called on the government to involve the youth in policy issues relating to energy, environment and climate change.
