Night to Remember: Opare ousts Liverpool on Europa debut for Besiktas

Ghana international Daniel Opare had a Europa debut to remember for Besiktas as they eliminated English club Liverpool on penalties on Thursday night.

The 24-year old started the game at left-back for Besiktas, with the Turkish club having to overturn a one-goal deficit.

Opare produced a solid defensive display as he kept the likes of Jordan Ibe and Mario Balotelli [when he operated close to the right flank] quiet.

He played a part in the goal that kept Besiktas in the tie as he ran into space after releasing the initial pass and set off, a move that provided a dummy for the cross.

In extra time, he made a bursting run into the edge of the Liverpool box and unleashed a speculative effort, but didn’t trouble Simon Mignolet.

With neither of the two teams failing to add a goal after the opener, the game was decide on penalties, with Besiktas coming out victors.

Opare recently joined Besiktas on loan until the end of the season, and was originally expected to miss the tie after sustaining a hamstring tear in his left leg.

After only featuring in two reserve games for Porto B totalling a play time of 114 minutes, he has made a couple of cup appearances for Besiktas, and will be looking to make his league bow soon.
