Akosombo Low Water

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has warned that the water level at the Akosombo Dam is at a precarious level.

According to the authority, the current water level was at 244 feet, which is just four feet above the minimum operating level of 240 feet.

The Planning and Business Development Manager of VRA, Mr Kofi Ellis, said on Wednesday that the situation had compelled the authority to strategically manage the water in the reservoir.

Mr Ellis was speaking at a Power Forum organised by Accra-based Joy FM at the Kofi Annan ICT Centre in Accra.

He said the water in the reservoir reduces by 0.05 foot every day, adding that at the current rate, the dam will hit its minimum operating level in 100 days.

If that happens, he said, the current power crisis will deepen.

Accordingly, Mr Ellis revealed that the VRA was managing the reservoir in such a way that the water can last until the rains return in July.
