Winneba, Feb. 23, GNA – The Central Regional Economic Planning Officer, Mrs. Lucy Owusu-Ansah, has said there was the need for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to recognize local stakeholders as key partners for economic strengthening and development in their areas.
She saide this at a four-day trainer of trainers’ workshop for Municipal/District Planning Coordinating Unit (MDPCU) in the Central Region on Local Revenue Enhancement (LRE) and Local Economic Development (LED) held at Winneba.
The workshop organized by the Central Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) with sponsorship by GIZ and European Union was aimed to build the capacity of the participants to understand the importance of LED in local governance and to strengthen community based organizations for effective LED implementation to help improve the livelihood of the citizenry.
The first section of the workshop was held for staff of the Central Regional Planning Coordinating Unit while the MDPCU are made up of Planning officers, Budget analysis, Directors of Ministry for Food and Agriculture, Revenue Superintendents and Business Advisory Coordinators.
She said LED, according to the National Decentralization Policy (2010), was a process by which local governments, business and other actors joined their services and resources to enter into new partnerships agreement with each other or other stakeholders to create new jobs and stimulate economic activities their area.
According to Mrs. Owusu-Ansah, LED approach ensured the creation and improvement of communication between the Local Government, the Private Sector and Civil Society.
She said involvement of stakeholders in LED was not only an indicator of good governance but also crucial to the legitimacy and sustainability of the local development initiatives.
She appealed to Municipal and District Assemblies in the region to collaborate with actors and stakeholders to create better conditions for economic growth and job creation in their localities.
