Mrs. Lordina Mahama has called on Ghanaians to actively participate in the monthly national sanitation day, being organized by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development.
She said cultivating a good attitude towards the environment is the only way that, communities would get rid of filth and secure a clean environment devoid of diseases. Mrs. Mahama made the call when she visited three polyclinics in Ashaiman, Kpone and Prampram, all in the in the Greater Accra region.
One of the focuses of the Lordina Foundation is to mobilize support to acquire medical items and embark on a nationwide medical outreach. This is to help enhance quality healthcare delivery. So far the programme has reached out to public health facilities in five regions. The current consignment, solicited from Medshare USA, has been presented to three Polyclinics.
The first port of call was Ashiaman Polyclinic. Since its establishment as a health post, it has seen expansion, over the years, till its current polyclinic status that renders 24-hour service to the people of Ashiaman and its surrounding areas. Mrs. LordinaMahama donated assorted medical items to the facility and also inspected conditions at the theatre.
Mrs. Mahama said the urbanized nature of the municipality demands that good hygiene and cleanliness becomes a regular practice.
“Let me use this opportunity to commend the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development for organizing the monthly national sanitation day. I urge you all to take part in the exercise. A clean environment ultimately promotes good health and reduces the cost of healthcare delivery”.
The Ashiaman Municipal Director of the Ghana Health Service, Madam EsiTucksonCoffie and the authorities of the Polyclinic were grateful to the government and Mrs. Mahama for helping them. They however, requested that the theatre at the facility be equipped to provide surgical services to the people.
The First Lady proceeded to the Kpone Health Centre. This facility was constructed by the Tema Rotary Club and commissioned in November 1996.
The Acting KponeKatamanso District Director of Health Services, Madam Patience Ami Mamattah said though, through the years, the Kpone Traditional Council, together with the Tema Oil Refinery, have contributed to the expansion of the facility, making it the largest public health centre in the KponeKatamanso District, the centre lacks basic equipment, gadgets and other facilities to provide the needed care and to support life. She said Mrs. Mahama’s gesture is therefore a welcoming one for all.
Mrs. Mahama said she has come to appreciate that life can be preserved and even extended in many cases if the right healthcare facilities and personnel are equipped and the right attitude and behaviours are inculcated into people.
“I wish to appeal to the Ghana Education Service to include sanitation and cleanliness in the school curriculum. And because diseases are no respecter of persons, and do not need permission to enter your community, I call for cross-sectoral collaboration on sanitation”.
At the Prampram Polytechnic, the authorities of the facility and the MP for the area welcomed the First Lady, Mrs. LordinaMahama and her team. The Polyclinic also got it share of medical supplies and equipment.
There, she refreshed the people’s memories about lessons of Ebola outbreak, in the three most affected African countries, which still present stark evidences that demands the investment of resources into the public health systems so as to avoid such disease in the future.
The authorities of the centre were grateful to Mrs. Mahama and the Lordina Foundation for the supplies.
