My Father Was A Director Of Social Welfare- Hence My Passion For Social Work—Matilda Amissah Arthur


The Wife of the Vice President, Mrs. Matilda Amissah Arthur, has stated that her passion for social work, especially her commitment in promoting the rights of children in the country and her love for the less privileged and vulnerable in society was ignited by her father, who was one time Director of Social Welfare in Ghana and was very instrumental in the setting up of the Osu children’s home and the Borstal Institute for juveniles in the country.

The Second Lady made statement yesterday when she donated assorted items to the New Abriem District hospital and the Presby Basic School in AkyemNtronang in the Birim North in the Eastern Region as part of her contributions to help the less privileged in society.

Mrs. Matilda Amissah Arthur said as a result of this throughout her upbringing, she has always been motivated to be care giver for children, orphans and the less privileged in society from her childhood days as the daughter of a social worker, so it has become her passion, so as a result would always want to champion and help reduce the increasing deterioration of child welfare wherever she finds herself.

Bemoaning the high incidence of child participating in economic activities and incidences of street children in Ghana, she would always want to give a helping hand to the needy and sick children hope in her own small way.

Mrs. Matilda Amissah Arthur, further stated that coupled with her profession as a librarian over the years , she has worked with children and has made constant effort at seeing to it that children, not only enroll, but also read and complete school and become better citizens for Ghana..

. Atthe New Abriem District hospital the wife of the Vice President, who was conducted round the hospital by the Medical Director of the hospital, interacted with some of the children on admission and gave them school bags, pencils, books, toys, and wished them speedy recovery.

Mrs. Amissah Arthur also presented assorted fruits, to the medical director of the hospital, Adding that the donation is in line with her commitment to improve healthcare delivery, especially, for children across the country and also commended the hospital and staff for their dedication to provide healthcare to the people and for managing childhood illnesses and encouraged the doctors, nurses and the other staff to do more to ensure quality healthcare for children.

The wife of the Vive President said her aim is to see that children are treated with care because they are of topmost priority to their parents. “Children are the future leaders and I am someone who believes in growing with the young generation in the area of health care delivery,” she said.

Later in the day the Second Lady for her passion in helping the needy as well as for providing social services for deprived communities especially children presented library books and ten set of lap top computers each to the Presby Basic School at Ntronang in the Birim North District of the eastern region.

She took the opportunity to congratulate the children because statistics available to her indicated that they have been performing very well, hence the need for her to encourage them the more, so that they continue to excel in their academic performance.

Donating the books and computers, Mrs. Matilda Amissah Arthur called on the teachers and pupils to make good use of the books by reading as a learning tool to aid the children. She said the computers and books were for the kids and not for the teachers calling on the authorities to put them in the computer laboratories for the student to make maximum use of it.

The Wife of the Vice President led by the Deputy Eastern regional minister , Hon. Mavis AmaFrimpong ,Birim North District Chief Executive, Mr Paul AboagyeDadzie, called on the chief of Abirem, Nana AmohKyeretwie I, at his palace to pay homage.
