Ghanaian Players Abroad: Recap of the UEFA Europa League


The UEFA Europa League resumed with its round of 32 games on Thursday night with some Ghanaians featuring for their respective clubs after the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

Christian Atsu was named in the squad for his Everton side that traveled to play Swiss club Young Boys.

The Ghanaian had five minutes of regular playing time, replacing Romelu Lukaku who scored a hat-trick in the 4-1 victory for Everton.

Guillaume Hoarau opened the scoring for Young Boys in the 10 minute but Saemus Coleman’s goal sandwiched between Romelu Lukaku’s first half double gave Everton a 3-1 half time lead.

Lukaku completed his hat-trick in the second half before being replaced by Christian Atsu as Everton won 4-1 away from home in the first leg of the tie.

Ghana international Samuel Afum who plays for Swiss club Young Boys did not get the chance to face countryman Christian Atsu in the game.

Frank Acheampong started the Europa League game against Dinamo Moscow and went on to play 86 minutes before being replaced by Nathan Kabasele.

The Ghanaian and his Anderlecht side could not find the back of the net at home as Dinamo Moscow forced a goalless draw away from home despite having Alexander Buettner sent off in the game.

Mubarak Wakaso did not play a part for his Scottish side Celtic in their six-goal thriller with Italian Serie A side Inter Milan.

The Ghanaian missed the game with saw his side in battling comeback to play a 3-3 draw at home with Inter Milan.

Abdul Majeed Waris was also out of action as his Turkish club Trabzonspor were thrashed at home by Italian club Napoli.

Napoli smashed four goals away from home to secure a 4-0 victory with the luxury of missing a penalty in the game.

Isaac Vorsah’s Austrian club Salzburg were defeated away from home by Spanish La Liga side Villarreal.

The Ghanaian however did not play a part of the 2-1 defeat away from home.
