Ghana Parliament Empty As NPP MPs Abandon Parliament

The Deputy Majority leader in Parliament on Wednesday registered his displeasure over the absence of Minority MPs in parliament.

Members of Parliament on Wednesday bemoaned the absence of their colleagues from sittings which negatively affected Parliamentary business.

Minority Members in Parliament abandoned their legislative duties to participate in the protest over what they describe as government’s poor handling of the energy crisis and the economic hardships in the country.

MP for Dormaa Central, Kweku Agyemang Manu was one of the two minority MPs who’s acting for the leadership of the minority in the absence of his colleagues.

He said his colleagues had no option but to participate in the demonstration.

He pleaded with the Speaker to go ahead with proceedings so that his colleagues can join them later.

Deputy Majority Leader Alfred Agbesi, on his part acknowledged the poor attendance in Parliament.

He however disagreed with the Dormaa Central MP explaining the MPs were voted for by their constituents to represent them in the house and not to abandon their duties.

The Speaker however told the House that he had been informed by the Minority Leader Osei Kyei Mensa-Bonsu that members of the Minority were not going to be present for Wednesday’s proceedings in the morning due to the demonstration.

Standing Order 48 of Parliament requires that if less than one third of MPs are not present during sittings, proceedings must be adjourned if quorum is not formed.
