Tanink Ghana has come out to clarify that the 30 Grand Cherokees given to each player of the senior national football team, Black Stars were gifts from the jeep dealer in Ghana.
Tanink Ghana CEO Roger Klogo told Joy News: “I want to say Tanink did present all those cars to the Black Stars and we did it together with our partners but without any government involvement. No government involvement at all.’
The franchise holders of Chrysler, Jeep, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Iveco, among other car models in Ghana said the jeeps were donated to the Black Stars under a special tax arrangement with the Government of Ghana.
A current model of the Grand Cherokee sells at a cost of $76,000. The 30 Jeeps will therefore cost a total amount of $2,280,000.
Mr Klogo’s claim has been corroborated by Sports Minister Mahama Ayariga who told Citi Sports that the auto firm said they ‘would take 50 percent of the cost of the vehicle and they would find individual sponsors to also take fifty percent so that the players would have the vehicles for free.’
‘Before the tournament there was a promise by Tanink Ghana Limited that if the players won the cup they will mobilise resources to get each player and not management members a Jeep,’ Mr Ayariga said.
The Black Stars won silver in the just ended Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Equatorial Guinea. They were beaten by the Elephants of Ivory Coast in penalty shootouts in the final game.
In addition to the Grand Cherokee, each player will also be given $25,000 by national sponsor Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) in addition to other gifts from corporate institutions.
